Breathing Air Quality Monitoring

Ensure safe and compliant breathing air for workers in critical environments.

At METS Lab Abu Dhabi, we provide reliable and accredited Breathing Air Quality Monitoring services for industrial, medical, and confined space applications. Breathing air must meet strict purity standards to protect personnel who rely on compressed air systems for life-supporting operations — particularly in sectors like oil & gas, construction, firefighting, and healthcare.

We help ensure that your breathing air supply is clean, contaminant-free, and compliant with international standards such as BS EN 12021, OSHA, and NFPA 1989.

Compressed air may contain contaminants such as oil mist, water vapor, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and other toxic gases. If left unchecked, these pollutants can cause:

  • Respiratory problems and toxic exposure.
  • Fatigue, dizziness, and impaired decision-making.
  • Long-term health risks or fatalities.
  • Non-compliance with legal safety standards.
  • Compromised worker performance in hazardous environments.

Routine monitoring and certification are essential for worker safety, regulatory compliance, and operational continuity.

Applicable Standards

Our testing and reporting are conducted in accordance with:

  • BS EN 12021:2014 – Respiratory protective devices: Compressed air for breathing apparatus
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134(i) – Breathing air quality and use
  • NFPA 1989 – Standard on Breathing Air Quality for Emergency Services
  • UAE ADNOC & HSE regulatory requirements
  • ISO 8573-1: 2010 (for general compressed air quality)

Parameters We Monitor:

  • Oxygen (O₂) – Sufficient for life-supporting levels (typically 19.5–23.5%)
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) – Extremely toxic even in low concentrations
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) – Elevated levels can impair breathing
  • Oil Mist and Hydrocarbons – Can damage lungs and equipment
  • Water Vapor (Humidity) – Can cause condensation and equipment corrosion
  • Particulate Matter – Filters must remove dust and debris effectively
  • Odor and Taste – Sensory inspection for contamination

Where Monitoring Is Needed:

  • SCBA systems for firefighting, emergency response, or rescue.
  • Compressed airline breathing systems in confined spaces.
  • Hyperbaric chambers and dive systems.
  • Oil & gas platforms and marine vessels.
  • Cleanrooms and pharmaceutical facilities.
  • Industrial respirator supply systems.
