CDPH Standard Method V1.2 Chamber Testing for LEED, WELL & Green Building Compliance
As green building certification and low-emission material requirements become standard practice across the UAE’s construction, fit-out, and furniture sectors, manufacturers and developers increasingly need documented proof that their products do not off-gas harmful levels of formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) indoors. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method V1.2 — also known by its earlier designation, California Specification 01350 — is the internationally recognised chamber-testing protocol used to demonstrate this. As an accredited emissions testing laboratory in the UAE, METS Lab performs CDPH Standard Method V1.2 testing for furniture, composite wood, flooring, and interior building products, supporting manufacturers, exporters, and developers pursuing LEED, WELL, and other green building certifications across the region. Our ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited laboratory evaluates formaldehyde, aldehydes, and individual and total VOC emissions from interior products using dynamic small-scale environmental chambers, in accordance with the CDPH/EHLB Standard Method Version 1.2 (2017). We model the resulting emission data against the exposure scenarios and allowable concentrations defined in the standard to determine compliance for submission to LEED programmes, as well as for buyers and specifiers requiring low-emission product documentation. We deliver clear, standard-referenced emissions reports covering chamber test data, modeled indoor concentrations, and pass/fail compliance determinations — the technical evidence needed to support a green building material submittal or a low-VOC product claim. Our Core Formaldehyde & VOC Emissions Testing Services Include
- CDPH/EHLB Standard Method V1.2 (2017) Chamber Emission Testing
- Formaldehyde & Aldehyde Emission Testing (HPLC)
- Total VOC (TVOC) and Individual VOC Speciation (GC-MS)
- Exposure Scenario Modeling (Office, Classroom, Residential)

- Furniture, Composite Wood, Flooring & Wall Covering Emissions Testing
Why Formaldehyde & VOC Emissions Testing is Important?
Dynamic Chamber Testing & Sample Conditioning
Products submitted for CDPH testing are prepared according to their standard usage instructions and conditioned for a defined period before being placed into a dynamic small-scale environmental chamber operated at fixed temperature, relative humidity, ventilation, and product loading conditions. Air samples are drawn from the chamber at set equilibrium intervals and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for VOCs and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for formaldehyde and other aldehydes, with reference to:- Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of VOC Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers — CDPH/EHLB Standard Method, Version 1.2 (2017)
Formaldehyde & Aldehyde Emissions
Formaldehyde is classified as a human carcinogen and a respiratory irritant, and is commonly released from urea-formaldehyde resins used in composite wood panels, adhesives, textiles, and certain coatings. Because indoor concentrations can accumulate in enclosed, low-ventilation environments such as offices, classrooms, and residential interiors, CDPH Standard Method V1.2 sets a specific allowable concentration for formaldehyde alongside its broader VOC criteria. METS Lab quantifies formaldehyde and other aldehyde emission rates from finished products, furniture assemblies, and building materials as part of the chamber test programme.Total & Individual VOC Compliance
Beyond formaldehyde, CDPH Standard Method V1.2 lists 36 individual VOCs of concern — including benzene, toluene, and other compounds commonly associated with paints, adhesives, sealants, and manufactured wood products — each with a maximum allowable concentration derived from the Chronic Reference Exposure Levels (chRELs) published by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). METS Lab measures both total VOC (TVOC) emission rates and the concentration of each individually listed compound against these limits.Exposure Scenario Modeling
Raw chamber emission rates are converted into predicted indoor air concentrations using the standardised modeling scenarios defined in CDPH Standard Method V1.2, which represent typical office, classroom, and single-family or multifamily residential environments with defined ventilation rates and room volumes. METS Lab applies the modeling scenario most relevant to the product’s intended end-use — for example, an office workstation panel versus a residential flooring product — to generate the predicted concentrations that certification bodies and specifiers evaluate.Green Building Certification Support
A CDPH Standard Method V1.2 test report from an accredited laboratory is one of the most widely accepted forms of documentation for low-emitting interior materials, recognised by USGBC LEED v4/v4.1 (BD&C and ID&C), the WELL Building Standard v2 (Feature X06), ANSI/GBI Green Globes, CalGreen, and product certification schemes such as FloorScore. METS Lab’s reports are structured to support these submittals directly, helping manufacturers, contractors, and developers document compliance for projects pursuing green building certification in the UAE and internationally.Key Parameters in Formaldehyde & VOC Emissions Testing
METS Lab’s CDPH Standard Method V1.2 programme covers the parameters below, selected according to the product category, its intended use environment, and the certification or specification the client is targeting.| Test Parameter | Reference | What It Evaluates |
| Formaldehyde & Aldehydes | HPLC per CDPH V1.2 | Formaldehyde and other aldehyde emission rates from product surfaces |
| Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) | GC-MS per CDPH V1.2 | Aggregate VOC emission rate from the tested product |
| Individual VOCs of Concern | CDPH V1.2 Table 4-1 (36 chemicals) | Benzene, toluene, formaldehyde and other listed VOCs against OEHHA chronic reference exposure levels (chRELs) |
